Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SOUND Attenuators of Colchester is ready to offer a stake in its subsidiary company, Contranoise, in return for further funding for its research into active noise control.

This started in 1969 with Sound Attenuators sponsoring work at Leeds and London Universities. More recently the University of Essex has been involved with the research.

Truck engine manufacturers may be among the companies now interested in taking a stake in Contranoise, for one of the likely applications of the system in future is in quietening commercial vehicle diesel engines.

Active noise control works on the principle of using sound waves, generated by a loudspeaker, to cancel out unwanted sound waves or noise.

Sound Attenuators has had a prototype system working on the exhaust of its 75kW diesel engine-powered generator at Colchester for three years, and sound pressure level reductions of up to 100fold have been achieved.
