Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Details of the voluntary British type approval scheme for tachographs were revealed by the DoE this week. The Minister for Transport Industries, Mr John Peyton, was expected to announce his plans for the scheme when he opened the FTA's seminar in London on Thursday (see page 38).

A leaflet The Tachograph, just produced by the DoE, sets out the advantages of a voluntary type approval scheme, notably that UK type-approved instruments (cheaper and simpler than the EEC type) already fitted by January 1 1976 could be retained until December 311979.

Parliament is to be asked soon to approve the introduction of a national scheme. The specification requirements are set out in the DoE document Requirement for Construction, Testing, Installation, Inspection and Use This specifies that each instrument must be able to indicate and record:—

(a) Distance travelled.

(b) Vehicle speed.

(c) Driving periods.

(d) Times during which vehicle is stationary, which may relate to other periods of work or attendance at work; breaks in work or rest periods.

(e) Opening of the case containing the record disc.

(f) The units of metric or imperial measurement applicable.

More details of the construction and test requirements, and of the dates on which tachographs become obligatory, are given in the article on pages 38-9 of this issue.
