Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WITH the new high-pressure phasing VY system as now fitted to Merlin injection-equipment test benches, there is no need to remove the delivery valves from the pump to ensure accurate timing. It is claimed that at least 30 minutes are saved in the case Of a six-cylindered pump.

The principle employed is that hydraulic pressure is created in the pump gallery sufficient to overcome the load imposed by the delivery-valve spring and the valve is lifted from its seating. When the element plunger is at the bottom of its stroke, the ports in the element holder are uncovered and the oil fuel has a free passage past The delivery valve to atmosphere by way of a swan-neck pipe.

When the pump camshaft is rotated, the element plunger covers the ports. It is in the final stage of covering them that the flow of fuel, which is visible from the swan-neck pipe, ceases.

This is the spill cut-off position where No, 1 cylinder is " timed." This position is carefully noted and is referred to when installing the pump on the engine. . Other elements of the pump are phased out in the same manner as the timing, a" degree" plate, incorporated in the test hench, being used for the necessary tappet adjustment.

Merlin test benches are made by the Merlin Engineering Co., Ltd., Flebbie Mills, Halifax, QUICK CONVERSION FOR AMBULANCES

THREE Karrier ambulances which

can quickly be converted from the carriage of 12 sitting cases to two stretcher cases have been supplied to Lancashire County Council by Kirbys, Ltd.. 292 Church Street, Blackpool. The council have nearly 300 ambulances and two-way radio is being installed.

The ability to convert the vehicles rapidly would be of value if the vehicles were sent out in sitting-ease form and had to be diverted by radio to an emergency. The Rarriers will be used in the more congested areas.
