Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A T a meeting last week between Cllr. Brain, chairman, and Mr. M. J. Miles, secretary, of the national organizing committee of the Lorry Driver of th,e Year Competition, Mr. R. G. Crowther, chairman, and Mr. R. Morton Mitchell, chief executive officer, of the Road Haulage Association, and Mr. F. D. Fitz-Gerald, 0.B.E., secretary of the Traders' Road Transport Association, the question of enlarging the scope of the competition was discussed.

The two Associations promised assistance in setting up new eliminating centres. It is understood that they did not offer to undertake the promotion of local competitions.

The subject was expected to be discussed by the national executive committee of the R.H.A. at their meeting at Bournemouth on Thursday.

Yesterday Cllr. Brain and Mr. Miles were to meet M. Gilbert Lesage, representative in Britain of Les Routiers, and M. Gonzague de. Saulieu, deputy director general and chairman of the French lorry drivers' contest, to discuss the possibility of holding an international competition next year.

The result of the discussion will be placed before the national organizing committee of the British competition in the hope that an international committee may be set up. Interesting suggestions have already been made.

B.C.N. TO CUT UNREMUNERATIVE SERVICES?

EABLY figures for the current financial year indicated that there had been an even greater decline than that of 4 per cent. allowed for in estimating additional revenue from fare increases, and that the estimated additional revenue from the fare revision would not be realized.

This comment was made by Mr. J. P. Senior, general manager of the Burnley, Colne and Nelson joint transport undertaking, in his annual report.

Mr. Senior went on to say that the only apparent solution so long as the fuel tax remained at its present level was the "drastic curtailment of unremunerative services, coupled, of course, with a yet more severe review of operating methods."
