Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A NEW bearing metal known as

Alzen 305, a white-bronze alloy, is being handled by Hill Alzen (Sales), Ltd.. a subsidiary of C. and L. Hill, Ltd., Stringes Lane. Willenhall. Staffs, members of the Owen organization.

The mechanical properties of this alloy compare favourably with those of the family of cast bronzes and gunmetals, and although the coefficient of expansion is higher than that of bronze, the thermal conductivity is approximately double.

One of the most important features of Alzen 305 is the boundary lubrication characteristic and it is this which makes it so suitable for bearing material. In the event of lubrication failure. complete seizure will not occur until a bearing temperature approaching 400° C. is reached.

Even when seizure does occur, the bearing will not weld to the shaft and there is little or no shaft grooving.

Alzen. Ltd., arc the sole licensees for the alloy in the United Kingdom, the British Commonwealth, U.S.A., Spain, Japan and certain other territories. C. and L. Hill, Ltd., have been granted an exclusive licence to manufacture and sell the alloy, in ingot form, in the United Kingdom, with a non-exclusive licence for castings and fabricated parts.

NEW SIMMS COUPLINGS

A NEW series of couplings has been ri produced by Simms Motor Units, Ltd., Oak Lane, London, N.2. The CR303 coupling, of 41 in. diameter, can take the combined load of an exhauster and fuel-injection pump, and can transmit 2.52 h.p. at 1,000 r.p.m. The CR33 coupling, made of steel with an oilresistant synthetic-rubber insert, is 3 in. in diameter and can accommodate a radial misalignment of pump and driving shaft to a maximum of 0.005 in. Both these units are suitable for Perkins P6 and R6 engines.

13,656 NEW REGISTRATIONS L'XCLUDING cars and motorcycles, 1—'13,656 vehicles were registered for the first time in August. The only category in which there was an increase over the previous month's figures was " agricultural engines," the respective figures being 2.875 and 2,437..
