COLD RECEPTION FOR FREE TRAVEL SUGGESTION

A N attempt by Newcastle Corporation to get the support of local authorities to persuade the Ministry of Transport to amend legislation so that councils may have discretion in respect of free and cheap travel facilities for elderly and disabled persons, is, apparently, being received without enthusiasm.

Preston Town Council have told Newcastle that they feel that no useful purpose would be served by supporting the proposal. In the view of Accrington Town Council, the Association of Municipal Corporations is the most suitable body to deal with the matter.

£625,000 ORDERS FOR BUSES

CONTRACTS for new motorbuses valued at £625,000 were approved on Monday by Glasgow Transport Committee. Leyland Motors, Ltd., were awarded an order for 100 chassis, valued at £250,000: Transport Vehicles (Daimler), Ltd., 50 chassis worth £125,000; and Walter Alexander (Coachbuilders), Ltd., 100 bodies, valued at £250,000. The remaining 50 bodies will be built by the corporation.

The buses, which are expected to be delivered by the end of next year, will replace trams.
