A Recent Acquisition by United Automobiles Services, Ltd.

AS announced in recent issues of The Oovunercial Motor, the 'United Automobile Services, Ltd., have made a number of extensive developments in the North of England in the course of the past few months. Information is now available with reference to further progress of the company, who have lately

acquired a large and old-established motor omnibus business in Scarborough, popularly regarded as the queen of north-east coast seaside resorts. The company have completed negotiations for the taking over of the business of Robinson's Motors, Ltd. (with the exception of the coaching side of the business), and this includes bus services to various districts which the company have built up steadily during the past few years.

The regular-service ramifications of the company necessitate the use of 20 saloon buses, which have been taken over, and the routes cover a fairly big mileage in the town and surrounding neighbourhood. In addition the United Automobile Services, Ltd., have taken over the 12 40-seater Leyland toast-rack vehicles which Robinson's Motors, Ltd., have used in the past to develop summer services to numerous favourite spots inside the town. These operate to Oliver's Mount, the Marine Drive and along the front, and are extensively patronized by holiday-makers, who, visit the town in thousands during the summer months. On the bus routes the United Automobile Services, Ltd., have immediately introduced a system of penny stages, and _these are .proving exceptionally popular.

The absorption takes place at a tithe when the question of municipal transport in Scarborough is the subject of keen controversy. One proposal is that the corporation should purchase the local tramway company, and another is that motorbuses might usefully be substituted for trams in order more efficiently to meet local travelling requirements. The United Automobile Services, Ltd., have signified their willingness to supply all the buses required to meet loeal needs in the event of the municipality deciding upon a change in the form of public-service transport.
