P. S. SMITH, V. S. ROBINSON and TILTING-STEVENS, LTD., No. 12,781, -dated 7th September, 1915.—The inventors claim to reduce the weight of plant and cost, of lighting on a vehicle by one-third and to provide at the same time a less delicate and more reliable apparatus than the battery and automatic switch. Their solution of the problem is very simple and direct.

They provide a small petrol engine and dynamo, complete in a single casing and running as an independent power unit for the single purpose of lighting the vehicle. It has no connection with the vehicle engine, either as starter or igniter, and is only at work when light is required. The crankshaft carries the rotor, the set has its own magneto, carburetter, governor, and lubrication system. Direct current is produced, of course, and the generator is designed to give a fairly regular voltage' under a slight variation of load or of about 5 per cent, in speed. The rotor if mbunted on a sleeve which fits over the engine shaft. It will be observed in the details of the drawing that the design generally aims at realizing the compactness and strength which the single-purpose duty of the plant admits. Obviously wiring of the simplest character will be applicable.

CHEVROLET Moron Co. (US. A.), No. 12,971, dated 14th December, 1914.—The spring consists of a curved plate of flat section connected at the ends to the vehicle frame and the axle housing. This plate is reinforced top and bottom with springs of decreasing length, giving the greater strength at the ends where the greatest bending moments occur and greater flexibigty towards the neutral point. More than one full distance plate may he used and several modifications in the sinuosity, reinforcing and clamping of the spring are shown in the specification. LEONARD Lovormy, No. 12,145, dated 23rd February, 1916. —The inventor explains that in multi-jet carburetters the nozzle for the pilot jet of fuel is generally controlled by a needle valve or screw valve, the settingof which may be varied. He proposes to replace this with a form of variable pilot jet nozzle controllable from the driver's seat.

The drawing shows a view of the mechanism as it is inter posed between the float-feed chamber and the main nozzles and choke tubes, of which it may be actuated quite independently. A tubular plug throttle valve is used, which may he rotated part of a turn by a lever with wire connection to within reach of the driver. The valve has ports cut in its walls and so placed that the outlet to the induction pipe and the uncovering of the pilot nozzle co-operate, while the inside of the valve serves as a mixing chamber. The necessary stops and adjustments and an extra air inlet are provided. The second figure shows the valve on a reduced scale as if the walls were spread out flat.

CFIARLES L. BESLER, No. 16,964, dated 2nd December, 1915.—An extra water tank is provided behind the dashboard so as to be of use on long jeurneys when fresh supplies of cooling water are not obtainable, The arrangement is shown in the diagram, but with the tank at right-angles to its

proper working position. The water flows from the tank to a settling chamber, then to a regulating chamber, and then to the radiator. The details of the invention include arrangements for preventing splash in the tank and regulating the supply to the =dieter. The utility of this device will be particularly apparent in hot, dry countries, in which long journeys are frequent.
