CM COVER STORY

SCANIAS RECENTLY-launched revised R-Series has been elected International Truck of the Year (ITOY) for 2010.

The ITOY jury chose the latest version of Scania's high-datum cab tractor ahead of the Volvo FH16.700. MAN TGM/TGL range and Mitsubishi Fuso Canter.

The R-Series grabbed the most votes thanks to its "continued evolutiori:including a more aerodynamic cab profile that not only saves fuel, but also improves air-flow through the engine compartment in readiness for the next generation of lower-emission Euro-6 diesels, which are expected to require both ECiR and SCR.

The revamped two-pedal Opticruise automated Rear-shifting system was also rated highly, as was the upgraded interior. Scania's new Driver Support System (de veloped on the R-Series) was further described as: An innovative learning tool capable of providing a continuous and pro-active assessment of a driver out on the road, rating their fuel consumption, driving efficiency and overall 'road

craft' with a simple, yet effective, 'star' rating system that encourages a driver to excel."

ITOY jury chairman Gianenrico Griffith declares: "During this extremely challenging time for Europe's commercial vehicle manufacturers. Scania has delivered a 'state-of-the-are truck that sets new standards in terms of fuel economy, driveability and overall efficiency" The ITOY award is presented every year by a 22-strong jury of leading European CV journalists to the truck launched in the previous 12 months that is felt to have made the greatest contribution to road transport efficiency. The RSeries secured 114 votes; Volvo's FH16.700 60 votes; MAN's TGL/ TGM 46 votes: and the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter 23 votes.
