THE FREIGHT TRANSPORT Association (FTA) says road improvement projects on the Al 1 and A14 are in danger of being shelved as the government looks to make multi-billion-pound savings.
However, the Highways Agency (HA) claims it is committed to road improvement plans such as the A14 Ellington to Fen Ditton in Cambridgeshire, but it is unable to confirm when the work will start, other than an expectation that it will be in 2012.
ETA regional head of policy Cordon Telling says the situation means logistics firms wanting to build along the strategic road network are being forced to wait. The Highways Agency is waiting on a nod from the Department for Transport to the nearest El Om on how much they will get,' he says.
He continues: We are concerned we don't know where we are on any of the projects. Do we carry on lobbying or take their word they will do it? Somebody is not going to be spending ElOm on a new warehouse or RDC if there's a big question mark over whether or not infrastructure is going to be built."
An HA spokeswoman says: "As with any major improvement scheme, funds for construction will only be finally committed when the construction work is ready to start."
