• Tanker drivers at Kuwait Petroleum have said goodbye to 44 years of driving memories with the retirement of one of their longest serving colleagues. George Potter, 65, of Spalding began driving in August 1954 when he was 21—he's decided to retire because tanker driving is now a "young man's game". He's worked on 33 vehicles in his career, but his favourite was the AEC Mammoth Major. "It wasn't the fastest vehicle in the world," he says, "but it pulled you through anything including huge snowdrifts. Nothing could stop it." Other memories don't concern the vehicles: "I remember delivering fuel at one house during the summer," he says. "Often some of the ladies would be topless in the garden sunbathing when I drove up!" George can still recall the days when wages were £8 a week and 40 gallons of paraffin cost just over £3. "I will miss the camaraderie of my colleagues the most," he says. "They are a great bunch." George is currently keeping himself busy by transporting patients to his local hospital.
