by Charles Young • Tamworth-based David Williams Transport (DWT) is the latest haulier to throw in the towel, blaming the loss of a contract and high diesel taxes.

Managing director David Williams says the firm's 27 employees have been made redundant; its 21 trucks and 34 trailers will be auctioned.

DWT ceased trading after losing a contract with fellow Tamworth firm Bison Floors which accounted for 50% of its £165m annual turnover. The contract was lost to Abingdon, Oxford-based Cannon Group.

"We could just about keep our head above water [with the Bison contract]," says Williams. "They said we could carry on, but only as sub-contractors. We were going to get even less money than before.

"I don't really need this any more," he adds. "It's like a hole in the head these days—no one wants to pay you.

"It's only going to get worse with this Government who lace the diesel with tax. What's the point of bothering? Nobody is going to miss a small company like us."

DWT was set up in 1968 and run by Williams and his wife Ginette. It also operated six and eightwheel tippers.

[1 The auction will be held by Malcolm Harrison at Tame valley Industrial Estate on Saturday 28 November.
