Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

NI was surprised to read your editor's comment in 5-11 November. I also attended the progress conference on Car Crime Prevention Year and I agree that there was no mention of thc theft of LGVs .1 cannot agree, however, that the Home Office has forgotten about truck crime.

When Car Crime Prevention Year was first proposed, we at

the Road Haulage Association asked for its scope to be widened to Vehicle Crime Prevention Year in order that emphasis and publicity could be given to truck and goods in transit losses. I believe that similar requests were made on behalf of the motorcycle industry and others and they, like us, were disappointed that the year was focused on car crime alone.

We agreed, however, to work alongside Car Crime Prevention Year and to continue to promote goods vehicle crime prevention through Truckwatch.

It is true to say that we would welcome stronger support from the Home Office in the battle against truck thieves and we will continue to lobby to this end. We do not, however, consider it totally unreasonable that they should wish to concentrate this particular campaign at the high profile and socially unacceptable level which car crime has reached.

feel that it is unfair of you to describe the Car Crime Prevention Year Campaign as .`pandering to the masses". Goods vehicle crime is of great concern to us as it is increasing rapidly, but it is still at the level where during a working life a driver should barely experience one crime.

In the Car Crime Prevention Year Campaign the Home Office has certainly not ignored us. Among its activities its personnel take part in the preparation of serm.ity standards for vehicles within the BSI, and we value that involvement.
