Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

GREATER Manchester Transport has unveiled a hybrid diesel electric bus it has developed in conjunction with the Electric Vehicle Development Group and Hybrid Vehicles (United Kingdom).

The bus is a converted Seddon Pennine IV midibus of the type used on its inter-station route in Manchester.

It is powered by a 33kW (43bhp) 2,100cc diesel engine and four 10kW electric disc motors. The diesel is used to meet the average power output required for the bus and discs provide the extra power needed during starting and accelerating.

The discs also serve as generators and put power into the batteries when the bus is running at less than its average power output.

The bus is to be used mainly for experimental purposes although it may be tried in service and the PTE is expected to assess 10 future Hybrid Vehicles midibuses which are to be built by Shelvoke and Drewry, The Seddon midibuses used on the station service are also due for replacement and the PTE has invited tenders from five manufacturers for more conventional diesel powered midi-replacements.
