Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

C. M. 1 Wood, Main Street, Shipton-byBenningbrough, Yorks. It concerns the testing of semi-trailer air-brake systems when a tractive unit is not available. The parts required are two Feeny and Johnson couplings (male) type A114/1 and (female) type CD 127-114/2, and two couplings, normally used for joining hoses to the air cylinders on a Leyland. Also two Schrader valves taken from some disused inner tubes.

The cylinder couplings are drilled out to fe in.-diameter clearance holes and the Schrader valves are inserted and brazed into position. This assembly is then screwed directly into the F and couplings and coupled to the trailer in the normal manner.

To test the trailer circuits the garage air-line and tyre-inflator coupling are used to charge the emergency tank, and

when this is done they are transferred to the service-line which instantly applies the brakes. The air line can be removed, but the brakes will be held on by the Schrader valve allowing one to check for leaks. To release the brakes, air is exhausted from the service-line. To' check the break-away system, air is exhausted from the emergency line which again should apply the brakes without leaking.

Comments Handyman: This problem of testing trailer brakes with no tractor bandy is a real nuisance. Whilst 1 use either shop air-line or outfield-based portable compressor to charge the trailer tank, I must congratulate Mr. Wood on a really first-class approach to the problem—one which will be a big help to those unfortunates who can often have a workshop full of trailers and nothing else. Full marks.
