QOMF. progress on faster running " schedules for fuel tanker drivers was recorded last week when "agreement in principle" was registered between the Transport and General Workers' Union and Shell-Mex and BP Ltd. At the same time progress on similar lines was made with Esso and Petrofina.

Details of the proposed settlement have not yet been released. But it is understood that the two sides agreed that time could be saved at the points of unloading and loading and that new running schedules would as a result lead to a substantial reduction of the amount of overtime being worked at present. At the same time drivers would get substantial increases to ensure that they will be no worse off, on average.

Urgency was given to the negotiations by the 48-hour strike of 1,350 tanker drivers in the North-West, the Midlands and South Wales ("The Commercial Motor ", Iasi week). It is now expected that the final agreement will be signed before the end of the month.

At present Shell drivers work an average week of 57-2 hours for a pay packet of £23 Is. 9d. Esso drivers average around £22 a week.
