panies, allegedly designed to avoid present wasteful running, was opposed by 33 objectors when it was heard by the North-Western Licensing Authority at Lytham St. Annes, last week.

Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., North Western Road Car Co., Ltd., Lancashire United Transport, Ltd., W. C. Standerwick, Ltd. and Yelloway Motor Services, Ltd., applied to run two coordinating express services between Oldham and Blackpool, one via Manchester and the other via Rochdale.

British Railways and nine operators already running excursions to Blackpool were among the objectors..

Mr. W. Blackhurst, for the 'applicants, said the proposal was to replace existing services already run along those routes either jointly, or separ ately, by the five companies, The scheme, he said, was placed before the Authority only after "a great number of meetings" between the companies concerned. Coach services from East Lancashire to Blackpool had been unrestricted in duplication, which involved a great deal of wasteful running.

Lower prices would be offered, the present day-return fare from Oldham to Blackpool being 6s. 6d., against the proposed fare of 6s. 3d. Asked by Mr. It Backhouse, for several of the objectors, how a person in the Oldham district would travel to Blackpool, Mr. G. Dawes, assistant traffic superintendent of Ribble, said that if he wanted to get there quickly he would take the express service, but if he wanted a "ride round the countryside" he would take the excursion. He agreed. however, that the express and the excursion services would use the same route.

Mr. Dawes pointed out that the nine " excursion " companies already had more than 200 picking-up points in the Oldham district.

Mr. H. Allen, assistant joint manager of Yelloway, said that if the application fell through, his company would press a former proposal to run extra services along the routes concerned.

Adjourning the hearing, the Authority, Mr. F. Williamson, said on Thursday that it would be several weeks before it could be resumed, because of other commitments.

A MENDMENTS made by the House 1--k of Lords to the Transport Charges, etc. (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill were accepted last week by the House of Commons.
