Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Big B.T.C. Units THREE companies are to be set up under Section 5 of the Transport Act, 1953, to take over big transport units as going concerns. The buyers are Millburn Motors, Ltd., Millburn Street, Glasgow, concessionnaires for Albion vehicles; a company to be formed by Mr. D. McKinnon, Ayrshire group manager of British Road Services, and Contract (Motor Hire), Ltd., York.

Farmers Lookto Distant Markets .

FARMERS looking for the best markets were wanting to send stock all over England, said Mr. J. W. Levitt, cattle haulier, of North Newbald, when hearing was resumed last week before the Yorkshire Licensing Authority of the block application by 31 East Riding livestock carriers for extensions of radius.

Earlier proceedings were reported in The Commercial Motor on November 5. The case is likely to continue for several weeks. The British Transport Commission are objectors.

Mr. Levitt said that it was not unusual for him to spend £1 10s. a week on telephone calls in trying to find hauliers to help him with orders. He had been forced to refuse a substantial amount of business.

For the applicants, Mr. E. Paterson said that unless short-distance hauliers were allowed to go farther afield, farmers would have to make greater use of railway services, which, according to witnesses, were unsatisfactory.

152,000 SURPLUS AT SHEFFIELD IN 1956

AN estimated net surplus of 02,000 is expected to be shown by Sheffield Transport Department at the end of March, 1956. Next year, there will be an estimated surplus of £320,000, but debt charges will convert this into a deficit of £14,000.

During 1956, it is estimated that £.396,000 will be needed for new buses. Total capital expenditure for the year will be £466,000.

This is part of an estimated capital expenditure of £1,214,722, of which £866,722 has already been approved. This provides for 112 double-deck buses to be bought next year, and covers half the cost of 15 double-deckers for the Sheffield Joint Omnibus Committee.

GOSPORT CO. TO EXTEND?

THE Gosport and Fareham Omnibus Co. have applied to the South Eastern Licensing Authority to take over, with some modification, the stagecarriage services between Fareham and Catisfield and Fareham Park Estate at present licensed to Hants and Sussex Motor Services, Ltd.

The proposed transfer of these services follows the resignation from the boards of the Hants and Sussex group of Mr. and Mrs. B. S. Williams (The Commercial Motor, October 15). The Hanson group, of Huddersfield, are also negotiating with the Commission for the recovery of businesses formerly owned by them.

According to the special Scottish fist, unit 4508, to be purchased by Millburn Motors, Ltd., includes premises at Leafield Road, 77-79 Whitesands, 87-89 Whitesands and Brooms Road, Dumfries; 16-22 St. Andrew Street and Lewis Street, Stranraer; Townhead Street, Lockerbie, and 113-117 Elliott Street, Glasgow, C.3.

The list showed 27 operational vehicles in Dumfries, 24 in Stranraer, 24 in Lockerbie and four in Glasgow, as well as spare vehicles and trailers, a total of 79, compared with a figure of 83 announced last week by the British Transport Commission and the Road Haulage Disposal Board. The fleet includes 17 articulated outfits, four rigid six-wheelers, three eight-wheelers, a tipper and a milk tanker.

Transfer on December 11 Mr. McKinnon is responsible for purchasing Kilmarnock unit 4510, comprising 47 vehicles and premises in Irvine Road, Kilmarnock. Ho is the official to whom The Commercial Motor referred on November 5. He said that he hoped the new company would be able to form associations with other hauliers in various parts of the country tor the interchange of traffic. He expected that the transfer would be completed on December 11.

Contract (Motor Hire), Ltd., . are understood to be buying the shares of N.M.U. (1954), Ltd., the formation of which by the B.T.C. was announced in The Commercial Motor on October 22. The transfer will involve 272 vehicles engaged mainly on a group of six contracts.

Contract (Motor Hire), Ltd., are associated with Rowntree's, whose distribution system was described in this journal. on May 23, 1952. At that time, about 30 confectionery makers and four associated concerns were making use of it on a pooling basis.

32,351 MORE C VEHICLES

IN the year ended September last, 1 17,613 more operators took up C licences, and the number of C-licence vehicles rose by 32,351.

The number of C-licence operators was 447,588, compared with 429,975 a year earlier, and the total of vehicles was 892,395, against 860,044. Over 93 per cent. (832,19.0) of the C-licence vehicles now in use do not exceed 3 tons unladen.
