J&L Commercials puts the focus firmly on its used stock, as Webwatch discovers

Company: J&L Commercials Address: www.jlcommercials.co.uk

Homepage

The J&L Commercials homepage is simply and sensibly laid out. The various categories of used stock are listed alphabetically down the left-hand side, from ‘cars’ through to ‘vans’, with other links to be found in the horizontal menu running along the top.

In the centre of the page is a brief introduction to the Burtonwood, Cheshire-based dealer as well as the option to sign up for its email stock updates.

As some of the categories of stock may be empty (for example, there were no hook-loaders available when we visited the website), click on the ‘Stock list’ link in the top menu to be presented only with categories that are populated with stock.

As well as those categories you might expect to see, such as ‘tractor units’ and ‘rigids’, the website’s more unusual offerings include horseboxes and a selection of traffic management vehicles.

Product search

Once you have chosen a category, the website will display a thumbnail image and brief details for each relevant item – including make, model, year and mileage. Price is given for some but not all products.

Click on any thumbnail (or the corresponding ‘more’ link) for a full spec and a wide selection of photographs – sometimes 15 or more for the one vehicle. The high-quality photos are taken from a variety of angles and include both internal and external shots. Select any to open a pop-up gallery.

The J&L website is designed by the same company behind DG Taylor’s site (reviewed CM 3 March 2011), so it is unsurprising that the two sites share some features.

On the product detail page, for example, you will find: a currency converter allowing conversion between almost 100 currencies; a downloadable PDF datasheet for easy printing, sharing or viewing on a mobile device; and an online enquiry form.

There is no search function within the stock list itself but you can use the ‘search’ box in the top right to look for a specific make, model or keyword. You cannot then refine your search further. Much of the stock dates from 2005-2008 and a typical example would be a 2007 DAF XF105 460 with 600,000km on the clock and POA.

Other pages

The top navigation menu on any page lets you click through to: the ‘contact us’ page with address and interactive map; information on ordering from J&L; and a photo gallery – presumably of sold items of stock.

In the top right, you will also find the option to translate the website into a number of European languages.

Conclusion

An easy-to-use site that showcases its stock well.
