Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

December last year was a good month for Brakes, with a seven-year transport contract struck with pub chain Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) valued at more than £200m, as well as a seven-year distribution deal with the UK’s biggest caterer Compass Group. The Compass deal will see Brakes deliver £300m of goods to 5,500 of the caterer’s sites. Through delivery consolidation, Compass will “enable us to further reduce our environmental footprint”, according to MD Ian Sarson.

DBC Foodservice signed a contract worth £25m to distribute various products for SSP – the firm behind many travel concessions, such as Upper Crust and Burger King last September. It has just landed a £2.5m a year deal to supply Notcutts Garden Centre Group. On the 3PL side, April 2008 saw Premier Inn and Beefeater owner Whitbread outsource its foodsupply operation to Kuehne + Nagel to save £25m a year. At the time, then Whitbread chief executive Alan Parker said the deal was a “compelling financial case for outsourcing versus retaining in-house food operations”.
