Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE MANAGING director of a landfill site which is being investigated by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency following movements of waste from Northern Ireland has hit back over claims of illegal operation.

Robert Drummond, boss of the Straid Farms Landfill at Lendalfoot in Ayrshire, has confirmed that his site receives waste from Northern Ireland, but stresses that this operation is in accordance with current legislation, "The waste industry in Northern Ireland and Scotland is heavily regulated and I receive information in a Transfer Note for every delivery of waste at Straid Farm Landfill." Drummond reports.

"Jam bound by statute to determine whether I can or cannot take such waste. We work closely with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) who carry out comprehensive monitoring at the site and we comply with all aspects of our Waste Management Licence and the laws regulating waste disposal," he adds.

"We share the concern of others when suggestions of irregularity within the waste management industry are made and, in our capacity as a final recipient of waste from many sources, we assist the relevant authorities fully when these are formally investigated."

In October last year BBC Northern Ireland followed a load of domestic waste being taken from Wexford in the Irish Republic directly to the site.
