Milk Haulage

The free market for milk is being opened up providing further opportunities for hauliers to tender for the haulage of bulk milk. The Milk Marketing Board has submitted an application under the Agriculture Act 1993 for approval of a Scheme of Reorganisation for the arrangements relating to the marketing of milk. Subject to approval of the Scheme, Milk Marque, a co-operative registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965 membership of which will be open to all dairy farmers in England and Wales, will take on certain of the MMIB's assets. An important part of its operations will be the establishment ofan efficient and flexible milk collection service for its members. The Opportunity Preston and Cardiff Areas Milk Marque intends eventually to offer all its haulage requirements for tender. As part of this process the work carried out from 23 depots nation-wide was offered for tender at the end of last year.

A further opportunity has been identified for the collection of milk in the Preston and Cardiff areas from the date that Milk Marque commences trading, currently expected to be 1 November 1994, and tenders are invited from interested hauliers. The contract will require the establishment of suitable operating centres and the provision of specialist bulk tankers, although the vehicles may be available from the existing contractor.

Milk is a highly perishable product with milk collection operating 365 days a year. In order to ensure the quality of service required by Milk Marque customers and members, prospective tenderers will have to satisfy detailed operational and financial criteria.

Until the Scheme of Reorganisation is approved by the Minister, Milk Marque will not be in a position to offer contracts to hauliers. However, details are now available for these two areas and interested companies should contract Milk Marque Distribution by Friday 3 June. For more information contact: Bruce Palmer
