• Short-haul intermodal transport opportunities increased for operators in the Wakefield region last week with confirmation that a freight village to handle business through the Channel Tunnel will be built at Normanton.
Work is expected to begin in September, for completion by the beginning of 1996. In the future, local intermodal specialists will get better useage from their vehicles over short haulage distances," says vice president of the mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce Andrew Padley.
Wakefield Council leader Colin Croxall says the 370-acre Wakefield Europort development will "prime the pumps of industry". Railfreight Distribution says 400,000 tonnes of freight a year could pass through the site.
European Regional Development Funds will help finance the project, to be developed by the council and construction company AMEC.
