R. H. Teager, 49, assistant managing director, National Carriers Ltd, has been appointed to succeed H. Kinsey as managing director when Mr Kinsey retires at the end of August. Mr Teager graduated in economics at London University. He served with the Royal Air Force during the war and afterwards gained industrial experience in the textile, plastic and rubber industries before joining British Railways Sundries Division in 1967 in a management services role. He became an assistant general manager in 1968, a director of National Carriers Ltd on its formation and assistant managing director in 1969 Sir George Farmer, chairman of Rover since 1963, has been appointed chairman of British Leyland following the retirement of Sir William Lyons and Lewis Whyte, while Jack Plane has been appointed an additional deputy chairman until his retirement in May 1973. Sir George has been a director of British Leyland since April 1969. Mr Plane was largely responsible for the rationalization of the British Leyland interests in South Africa, Australia :and many other overseas territories. Mr Plane1 has relinquished his appointments as a deputy managing director of the Corporation and MO of British Leyland International. He will alsii=iesign as chairman of Leyland Motor Corporation Australia and Leyland Motor Corporation of South Africa, but will continue as a non-executive director of both companies. Sir David Barran who is retiring as chairman and md of Shell Transport and Trading Co Ltd has accepted an invitation to join the board of British Leyland in a non-executive capacity with effect from July 1 1972.

Peter A. Townley, at present assistant traffic manager (Durham) with the Northern Group of Companies, becomes assistant traffic manager (operators) of Ribble Motor Services Ltd on June 1. He succeeds D. Wilson who has been appointed traffic manager.

Richard G. Roberts is to succeed Robert F. Bushrod as general manager of the Eastern National Omnibus Co Ltd, an NBC subsidiary. Mr Roberts is at present traffic manager of the Northern Group of Companies, and Mr Bushrod is now head of the tours division of NBC's central activities group, Ray Horrocks is leaving the Advanced Vehicle Operations section of the Ford Motor Co Ltd, where he was manager, to join Eaton Ltd as director of European operations, materials handling.

L. T. Witcher who started to sell gaskets for J. Payen Ltd in 1925, and whose area for many years was the whole of the UK, has retired.. His customers latterly were the operators of fleets of commercial vehicles.

J. C. Smith, 57, general manager of East Midland Motor Services Ltd, is moving to Southdown Motor Services Ltd, Brighton, as general manager. Michael H. Canning has joined King Truck Equipment, Ltd, of Market Harborough, as managing director. Mr Canning was formerly a director of York Trailer.

OBITUARY

We record with regret the deaths of H. Stuart Driver, Alexander McLennan and Herbert Richard White.

Mr Driver, a technical and sales representative with Gardner Engines (Sales) Ltd, was on a visit to Britain from Australia. He joined the company in 1952 from the North Western Road Car Co Ltd where he was chief engineer.

Mr McLennan, 64, was head of A & C McLennan, which runs 61 buses and employs 200 people in Perth, Blairgowrie and Spittalfield. After the second World War he entered the building side of the business and for a time constructed his own bus bodies. The firm is also in business as a car transporter.

Mr White, 94, founded Duple Motor Bodies Ltd, in Homsey in 1919, at that time building light vans and car bodies, and, before moving to The Hyde, Hendon, its first charabanc, which was built on a six-wheeled Lancia chassis. Production is now concentrated at Blackpool.

Raymond F. Thompson has been elected chairman of the Gauge and Tool Makers' Association. Mr Thompson is chairman and managing director of Raymond F. Thompson (Engineers) Ltd, of Harlow.
