Transmec's moving to a bigger site in Bradford

THE ITALIAN-OWNED Transmec haulage group is embarking on a recession-defying expansion at its Yorkshire base.

Transmec is moving three miles from its Cleckheaton depot to a site in Dealburn Rd, Bradford that, at 6,763m2, is twice as big. It is making some changes to the £3m site before it transfers operations and hopes to move in a few weeks.

A spokeswoman for Transmec says some new jobs will be created as a result of the move, but it is too early to say how many.

She adds that the company has received "countless" phone calls asking about work in recent weeks, The Cleckheaton depot employs 40, including 20 drivers, eight warehouse workers and 12 office staff.

The company's work is mainly general haulage between the UK and Italy carrying a wide range of items, including machinery and fashion goods. Transmec, which was founded 154 years ago, has offices throughout the world including France, Poland and China.

The spokeswoman has no simple explanation for its continued success during the recession, but stresses that it has not been due to cutting rates. "We have maintained our prices, because we wouldn't be making any money if we cut them," she says. "I think people must use us because of the service we give."
