Rail Link strikes a chord

A REINSTATED RAIL link is expected to significantly reduce congestion around the port of Liverpool. The 750-metre Olive Mount Chord branch line has been reopened 20 years after it closed, restoring the direct rail link between the port and the West Coast Main Line.

Its re-opening is expected to reduce the number of truck journeys to and from the port by 50.000 a year it also allows the latest generation of high-cube 9ft 6in (2.9m)-high containers to access the port by rail.

Chris MacRae, ETA rail freight policy manager, says: The direct access that the opening up of the Olive Mount Chord gives to the West Coast Main Line will be of great benefit for the supply chain as it will make shifting goods from Liverpool down to the key distribution hubs in the Midlands so much easier."
