• The Transport & General Workers Union's DriverCare insurance, launched last October, has made its first big payout to a driver forced to give up work through ill health.
Last week Southampton driver Brian Peters, who has had to give up driving due to chronic arthritis, received a cheque for £7,000 from local T&G transport organiser Jennie Sandie. Until recently Peters worked for United Transport.
So far the loss-of.licence scheme has attracted 120,000 members, For an extra 50p per week, T&G members who lose their driving licences are entitled to a lump sum. Members
paying .£2.65 a month can receive up to £30,000 if they are forced to stop driving. Existing union members were entitled to the payout irrespective of the state of their health before its start date.
According to Sandle, the lossof-licence policy is attracting new members to the union.
