STANLEY ROWLEY, who drives a refrigerated artic on night deliveries for BOC, has no time for sophisticated gadgets to monitor fuel consumption. Ignoring them, he relied on a rev counter and good technique to win a £250 travel voucher as first prize in the Renault Trucks economy driving competition.

Yet a former employer once accused him of having a heavy right foot. His claim that fuel had been siphoned out of his vehicle is supported by his performance in the competition. Admittedly, only two of the 12 prize-winners were slower than him but speed was not the object of the exercise.
