• A full investigation is being made into an incident at the Stockport, Cheshire, depot of a Yorkshire road haulage company at which it is alleged a 10-ton van was driven at a line of six pickets outside the premises. This was revealed after reports of outbreaks of violence at the depot which belongs to Harrisons of Dewsbury and which is involved in a strike that started last month when several drivers were dismissed following a dispute over wages and conditions.

Mr J. Stevenson, Manchester regional officer of the United Road Transport Union, stepped into the picture this week, appealing to over 150,000 drivers to "black" the Yorkshire freight haulage firm. Mr Stevenson claimed to have been a witness to the scene in which the van was driven at the pickets and he told CM "the firm has tried

to impose new conditions on the men without consultation and negotiation. We want the men to be reinstated and we want to negotiate on a new scheme."

Mr A. Lumb, Harrisons' transport superintendent, said the firm had agreed to investigate the allegation about the van.
