BOURNEMOUTH is to apply for permission to increase to 2d. the Ifd. minimum fare on the municipal buses, for 5d. and 6d. to be added to the five-day and six-day weekly tickets, and 2d. a day to longer period tickets. The Corporation also propose to reduce the frequency of services after 7.30 p.m. in winter.

This decision was taken after a meeting of the council had been told that the expected deficit on the transport department for 1954-55 was £17,378, excluding any further increase in fares. Opposing the 2d. minimum, CIIr. W. J. Whitelock, a coach operator, said it was the general trend to increase fares, but he thought they should make a stand.

The estimated cost per mile of operating trolleybuses next year was 33.72d., against 21.31d. in 1945. Operating costs of motorbuses were expected to be 27.75d. per mile, compared with the 1945 figure of 18.76d. " INNER-RING" SERVICE FOR • BELFAST?

AN " inner-ring " bus service linking suburban bus and rail services at termini on the perimeter of the city centre will be tried in Belfast for an experimental period of six months if approved by the city council and the Ministry of Commerce. The transport committee, who recommended the plan last week, propose to begin the experiment on June 1.

The committee have also recommended the council to approve a standard fare of 3d. on the service. A 44. fare was suggested by the subcommittee set up to investigate the scheme.

HIGHER FARES IN YORKSHIRE? COLLOWING Hull Transport DepartI ment's application for higher fares on certain services, East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd.,. are now applying for increases on the services in which they have a joint interest.

Bradford Transport Department, Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co., Ltd., and the West Riding Automobile Co., Ltd., have submitted applications for higher fares in the Bradford area.

advocate's fees, were imposed on the St. Andrew's Steam Fishing Co., Ltd., Hull, and 11 of their drivers, at Hull City Magistrates' Court, when they were found guilty on 39 charges of failing to cause current records to be kept, and on, eight charges of permitting drivers to drive for excessive hours.

The drivers were found guilty of failing to keep records and were fined a total of £81, with a further £6 for driving excessive hours.

B6 FORESTRY TRACTOR WITH ANCHOR

AN anchor is fitted to the rear of a new Auto-Tractor winch tractor with a Leyland 90 b.h.p. oil engine and five-speed gearbox which has been built for forestry work. The vehicle is a lightweight model, complementing heavy transporters based on Leyland 12.B3 chassis introduced by the AutoMower Engineering Co., Ltd., shortly after the war.

The overall length is 17 ft. 10 in. The radiator and engine are mounted well to the rear of the front axle, the front part of the frame supporting the winch gear. Some 75 per cent. of the weight is disposed on the rear axle, thus increasing tractive effort. The differential gear can be locked.

The winch drum, driven from an auxiliary gearbox, also operates a crane, which has a height, when raised, of 12 ft. 2 in. The drum has a capacity of 100 yd. of I-in.-diameter wire rope with a breaking strain of 22 tons.

Girling brakes are fitted to the rear axle and the hand brake takes effect on the transmission. A vacuum system is provided for the operation of, the trailer brakes, which can also be actuated by a lever in the cab.

When tree trunks are being winched, the anchor is used to stabilize the outfit. They can be lifted by the crane, which is at the rear of the vehicle, and deposited on the trailer.

REAR DOORS FOR ALL DOUBLE-DECKERS'

A PROPOSAL that double-deckers inwith rear entrances should have mechanically operated doors to reduce platform accidents is being discussed at the Scottish Accident Prevention Conference, which opened at Inverness yesterday and closes today. It is also being urged that two rear lights and two reflectors should be fitted by vehicle owners well in advance of the dates. stipulated by the Minister of Transport.
