Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

OPERATORS buying back vehicles from British Road Services needed the support of industrialists, declared Mr. Bernard Winterbottom, national chairman of the Road Haulage Association, when he spoke at the annual dinner of the Potteries Sub-area last week.

Those who were able to offer hauliers work could help to prove that under private enterprise better service could be given than under nationalization, he said. It would be to the advantage of everybody w make denationalization a success because, with the return of competition, rates were bound to fall slightly.

"We shall have to face that," Mr. Winterbottom added. "In a year Of two's time, however, I am confident that the industry will settle down and give a better service at reasonable rates than ever it did under State control."

NEW COMPANY TO BUY UNITS ANEW company, Thamesmouth Transport, Ltd., to buy transport units has been formed by Mr. R. B. Brittain, proprietor of National Parcels and Goods Services, Great Tarpots, South Benfleet, Essex, and Mr. Roby S. Smith, Mr. Brittain is chairman of the Eastern Area of the Road Haulage Association and of the Association's Express Carriers' Group.

Mr. Smith was connected with Westcliff-on-Sea Motor Services, Ltd., and is now a prominent agent for the Rootes Group. He also owns the largest fleet of hire cans in Southend.

Mr. Brittain told The Commercial Motor on Tuesday that no tender by the company had yet been accepted. The new concern would engage in general long-distance haulage, but would not carry parcels. It would be based at Great Tarpots. The reason for forming it was that he did not wish anyone outside the family to join the management of National Parcels and Goods Services.
