ATOUCH of variety invariably marks the York round of the Lorry Driver of the Year contest and last Sunday's fixture at Rufforth Aerodrome was no exception. A municipal prize had been introduced and although (local councils being famed for looking before they leap) this offer produced only two entrants, the drivers concerned were certain that there would be wider support from their brethren when this class became more widely known next year. There was also a supplementary category for vehicles up to 16 ft. long and under 20+ cwt. unladen which was, of course, non-qualifying so far as the national final was concerned. In this section there were half a dozen drivers ready to try their skill.

The " winner of winners ", as the overall leader is termed at York, was W. Barnett (Ben Johnson and Co. Ltd., Bedford) from Class El, who lost 168 marks in the run-off, which gave him a lead of six over R. Hodgson (J. H. Trotter Ltd., Commer) from Class D. For the final, all contestants used identical Commer four-wheelers. The municipal award went to T. Beautyman (Derwent R.D.C., SD Pakamatic), who, with 265 penalty points, had an average performance in Class C; he was appearing for the first time in a lorry driver competition. As last year, Concrete Services Ltd. were the team winners, their drivers being Luck, Dobson and Dale. There were close finishes in several classes and first-test markings had to be used by the stewards to settle a number of ties.

Loaded Vehicles

With a total of 118, the entry was a little up on previous occasions and compared with most other rounds it included quite a high percentage of haulage vehicles. Here again, in York it is no exception for the participating vehicles to be loaded and ready for an immediate operational journey. T. Bibby (J. C.

822 Sanders and Sons Ltd. Bedford), for instance, carried a load of furniture due for delivery in the South of England on Monday.

For the road route a semi-rural circuit is employed with many sections narrow enough to ensure that the drivers are constantly on the alert. A feature of value is a stop and restart test on one of the hills. The general standard of performance on the road was good and so was that in the oral test. Several drivers reached the manoeuvring test without incurring penalties. R. Ibbetson (Ripon and Pateley Bridge R.D.C., SD Pakamatic), whose vehicle was equipped with paper towel container and plastic washbowl, had a clean sheet on Highway Code and the road route. Not surprisingly, since he was using a unit he had taken over only a few days previously, some of his test performances lacked. the winning touch.

• Competition was particularly close in Class C wherein R. Rodger Jones and A. Rhodes (both Mechplant Ltd., Bedford) at first tied with total marks of 167. Both had double nits on the code and the road. The third man in this section, J. Flower (Concrete Services Ltd., Thames), five marks behind them, went through the parking test without dropping a single point. Allocation of No, 13 was evidently fortunate for J. Luck, who in class B tied with P. Moncaster, each of them with 100 points, Since he had a better showing on the first test the premier place went to Luck.

Results Omitted Dimensional difficulties led to the omission of the results of the bay test in respect of three of the largest-vehicle classes, in which entries were in any event small. A move to omit the results of the parking test also from Class G was the subject of vigorous protest which was upheld by the steward after some consideration.

Best in the non-qualifying small vehicles class was V. Cussons (A. Moss and Son, Morris) with a loss of 167 points. A.T.
