THE Minister of Transport has asked local authorities in London to consider whether they can reduce loading bays without causing undue difficulty to frontages, so as to make room for more parking meters.

Revealing this in the House or Commons this week, Mr. Marples said that many. of the loading bays in in London's meter zone were seldom more than half occupied.

Earlier, the Commons gave a first reading to a Bill which, if it became law. would mean that local authorities would not have to pay tax on the money they receive from meters. Sir John LangfordHolt (Tory, Shrewsbury). who introduced the Bill, said that out of every 6d. put in a meter only 2d. was profit, and Id. of this went in tax.

Mr. Marples said he would be receiving very soon the outline proposals of the committee investigating a plating scheme for goods vehicles. He would then consider what should be done to bring a scheme into operation.

Progress on Bridges

PR OGRESS reports on two important I bridges were given in the Commons this week. Mr. Marples said that if the present rate was maintained the Severn Bridge might be completed some months before the contract completion of December, 1966. Mr. Michael Noble. the Scottish Secretary, said that the Forth Road Bridge would be opened to traffic this autumn.
