Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN his annual report, • Mr. G. H.

Pulfrey, general manager of Hull Transport Department, reveals himself as a champion of the one-man-operated trolleybus. Referring to a special prototype which had been put into servite, he said that full advantage could not be taken of the possibilities of the marque with only one vehicle in operation.

A test, he said, could be made only within the framework recommended for one-man operation, but there would be a saving on costs despite higher wages for the driver-conductor and a reduction to a flat fare.

The loss, of passengers continued during the winter because of the weather, television and the general shortage of money. Mileage had accordingly diminished, but this was not a solution of the problem of city traffic, for which the most frequent service possible was necessary. This would be available under one-man operation, which, by virtue of the lower fare offered, would tend to increase traffic, irrespective of the existing monetary situation.

ROAD COMPETITION JUSTIFIED

AFTER witnesses supporting a coach firm had described how they had to stand in trains for long periods on the way to holiday resorts, the Western Licensing Authority granted road service licences to Messrs. A, and S. Burchill, Staple Hill, and commented that as long as the railways carried passengers in the corridors, there was every reason for road operators to offer competition.

The firm are now authorized to run express carriages to Southsea, Torquay, Bournemouth and Weymouth on Saturdays in July and at the beginning of August. Objections by the Railway Executive and Messrs. G. Feltham and Sons, Kingswood, failed.
