A SUGGESTION that all national

ized provincial bus undertakings be operated by a partnership between private enterprise and the State was made, last week, by Mr J. S. W. Wills, chairman of B.E.T. Omnibus Services, Ltd., in his annual report.

He said that the British Transport Commission had inherited from the railways an equal interest with the company in the various undertakings which made up the group. Since 1929, there had been a partnership between road and rail which had worked smoothly, making possible the continued existence of healthy competition, whilst facilitating measures of co-ordination in the public interest.

"In my opinion," declared Mr. Wills, "a similar partnership—a partnership between private enterprise and the State —could, with advantage to the nation's passenger transport services, be extended to cover all the provincial undertakings now owned by the British Transport Commission.

"I exclude London, which is a special case. If, in this partnership, one were to substitute the former railway companies for 'the State,' the broad picture would resemble that obtaining from 1929 to 1947, a picture which, as few would deny, would bear very close inspection."

OLD GUY TROLLEYBUS REVIVED

A'part of their Coronation celebrations, the Hastings Tramways Co. restored to its original condition a 25year-old Guy 56-seat open-top trolleybus which has stood neglected in their yard since 1938. It was decided that the vehicle should he preserved as a " museum piece," as it represented a particularly interesting period in trolleybus development.

Workmen at the Silverhill shops stripped the vehicle, replaced worn parts and put it into running order. A sample of the original maroon paint under a top coat of green was matched and the trolleybus was finished in the company's original colour.

• The Guy was decorated for the Coronation, and during the summer months will be operated along the sea front.

NOT PIECEMEAL

A LTHOUGH busgservices for the new 1-1 town of Peterlee would have to be provided eventually, the matter should not be dealt with in piecemeal fashion. The Northern Licensing Authority made this statement when he refused Mr. R. J. Redpath, Blackhall Colliery, permission to run a service between Wingate and Horden.
