Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A N underfloor-engined passenger chassis with a Perkins R-type highspeed 108 b.h.p. engine has been added to the Seddon range of vehicles. The new model has the engine installed vertically amidships below floor level and is available in wheelbases of 13 ft. 11 in. and 16 ft. 6 in. The longwheelbase chassis weighs 3 tons 8 cwt. and with a Plaxton 41-seater luxurycoach body, the unladen weight is 6 tons 6& cwt.

The engine is mounted in conjunction with a David Brown four-speed synchromesh gearbox, having two Metalastik sandwich-type supports at the front of the engine and two Metacone units at the rear of the gearbox. The new Borg and Beck strut-type clutch of 14-in, diameter is used. The transmission includes a hypoid axle of 6.166 to 1 ratio as standard or an Eaton two-speed unit, with vacuum shift, as an alternative.

The braking system has a Clayton Dewandre 687 vacuum servo and Girling hydraulic master cylinder to operate the two-leading-shoe units, 16-in.-diameter drums being used at the front and 154-in. diameter at the rear.

Tyres of 9.00-20 in. section, 10-ply rating, with twins at the rear, are specified and long semi-elliptic springs are fitted in conjunction with Newton Bennett shock absorbers at both axles.

NO KENT APPEALS

LOCAL authorities in Kent have been considering applying for a rehearing of the application for a fares increase by Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., but Gillingham Corporation have indicated that most of them do not intend to appeal. Hastings Transport Committee also propose to take no further action.
