A Successful Event in which the Vehicles Displayed were of a High Standard

of Excellence. A Full List of Prizewinners in All Classes.

AREMARKABLE feature of the ninth annual parade organized by the Liverpool Area Committee of the Commercial Motor Users' Association was that 90 per cent, of the vehicles entered for the various competitions obtained a minimum of 70 per cent. of the total number of marks available. That fact is evidence of the keen rivalries for the principal positions in the prize lists. It is disclosing no secret to say that the judges themselves were surprised that over 50 per cent, of the total competing vehicles earned 90 per cent. or more marks, and, therefore, qualified for the possession of the Liverpool C.M.U.A. Special Award, which is a new triangular badge of white metal with enamel embellishments, to be affixed to the vehicle. The badge 'becomes the property of the winner. Drivers of vehicles which earned this distinction became • entitledto a first-class cer

tificate and a cash .prize. To the drivers of vehicles which earned between 80 per 'cent. and 89 per cent, of the total marks a first-class certificate was awarded, and to those with 70 per cent. to 79 per cent, a second-class certificate. Nearly 100 machines competed.

In the route parade which followed the competitions, 230 vehicles -participated, comprising 17 steam wagons and 213 petrol lorries.

It was a matter for regret that only three fleets competed for the Sentinel Challenge Cup which is awarded to the winner of the fleet class, and Greene%

Whitley and Co., Ltd., retained this honour. Twelve fleets of petrol vehicles sought the distinction of holding the Thornycroft Cup, which for three consecutive years was won by Joseph Crosfield and Sons, Ltd., with Thornycroft vehicles. This company did not compete thisyear for the Thornycroft trophy, which was awarded to Peter Walker and Son, Ltd., another Warrington concern which entered two Karriers and a Peerless. The haulage contractors' classes were rather poorly supported.

After the parade the judges were entertained to luncheon by the Liverpool Area Committee, and Mr. Toni Lawrenson presided in the absence of Mr. D. E. Watson (Greene% Whitley and Co.).

Mr. Barnett said it had been an excellent parade. Some people believed that motor parades had served their purpose, but so far as Liverpool was concerned it could not be said that such events: had outlived their utility.

Mr. E. S. Shrapnell-Smith, C.B.E., said he had not attended a particle , -where the judging had been more equitably or satisfactorily carried out.

Mr. P. G. Bristow mentioned that he had attended every parade held in Liverpool, and he congratulated the committee upon its success.

In a short speech, Mr. T. Lawrenson said that much of the success of the Liverpool motor parade had been brought about by men who, in dealing with transport problems, had given attention to both horses and motors.
