Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Edited by John Durant Twenty years of lorries

THE LATEST book by Nick Baldwin is Trucks of the Sixties and Seventies. It comes in what seems to be a trendy shape, being wider than it is high, but it is neat and clear. There are no colour shots, which seems a pity, but then this book is not in the coffee-table price range and it's really for enthusiasts.

The author has aimed to include a good cross-section of years and makes to help show styling and technical changes that have taken place. There are chapters on the USA; Russia, Estern Europe and Yugoslavia; Japan; UK; West Germany; Italy; Scandinavia and Netherlands; France; Spain; Switzerland; Austria, and other countries.

Other countries? He has photos of a Belgian MOL, Turkish Morris, Mexican Ramirez, Canadian Scot, Chinese Jay Fong, Australian RFW and Atkinson, and, of course, Ireland's Dennison.

This book is a Warne's Transport Library edition. It contains 196 photos.

Trucks of the Sixties and Seventies, compiled by Nick Baldwin, is published in hardback by Frederick Warne, 40 Bedford Square, London WC1. Price £5.95.

One for the managers

EMPLOYERS faced with the 'need to dismiss an employee must have at least a working knowledge of the procedures. Misconduct at the Workplace is the third in a series of ten handbooks produced as a guide to management in simple question and answer form how to avoid litigation and promote good industrial relations.

There is also a section on how to engage staff because they may have heard that it is virtually impossible to dismiss an employee without serious legal risk.

This misapprehension is soon dispelled when the handbook explains that each employer retains extensive discretionary powers and he is entitled to expect each employee to fulfil his basic contractual arrangements. ments.

"I'll take you to an Industrial Tribunal if you sack meis an often-heard threat. But provided that the employer considers he is justified in dismissing an employee, and he has followed simple procedure, he should have no worries.

The book explains, in layman's terms, such procedures prior to dismissal and then goes on to discuss tribunals and compensation. It is worthy of a place on any manager's book shelf, B.C.-H.

Misconduct at the Workplace is published in paperback by The Industrial Relations Briefing, 346 Harrow Road, London W9 2HP, Price £5.95.
