4INISTER of Transport Norman Fowler today announced vhich local vehicle licensing offices will be kept open ollowing his recent decision to increase the number of post &ices handling relicensing work from 2000 to 3000.

Answering a written Parlianentary question from James 'awsey (Rugby) Mr Fowler said: 'Over the next two years virtuIly all relicensing work will be ransferred to an increased lumber of post offices. This neans that I will not need as nany local licensing offices: By any 1982 I plan to reduce the iresent network from 81 to 53 nd to make worthwhile staff avings in the remaining offices. .bout 1000 civil service posts dill no longer be needed. Local iffices will continue to play an -nportant role in my attack on ,vasion, and will retain responibility for first registration and icensing and for licensing leavy goods vehicles.

Mr Fowler continued -The

future network, coupled with 3000 post offices, will provide a better service to the public at a lower cost to the taxpayer. We shall be doing all we can to avoid redundancies by placing staff in vacancies that arise elsewhere."
