FOR BUS workers campaigning against faulty buses, the Health and Safety at Work Act is a powerful weapon, according to the Transport and General Workers' Union paper The Record,reporting on action taken by Blackburn busmen to improve Corporation maintenance standards.
The Health and Safety at Work Act was said to be in strumental in the campaign as it increased the powers of the ordinary driver and gave him access to vehicle records.
Two years ago, the drivers' campaign in Blackburn led to a Traffic Commissioners' investigation into the town's bus maintenance operations.
The Corporation has since invested large sums of money to improve maintenance standards and has established a E41/2m maintenance depot.
