Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Practical experience and theory are carefully blended in the syllabus for the course for senior managers at Ashridge College sponsored by the Road Haulage Association. It will run from Monday, November 4, to Friday, Nov ember 8, 1968.

So great an interest has been shown that two further courses will be held at Ashridge from March 17 to 21 and from November 17 to 21 1969, and a five-day course will be staged at Strathclyde University from May 5 to 9 1969. There will be a second course at Strathclyde next year and probably a fourth course at Ashbridge.

The course this year will be introduced on Monday, November 4, by the principal of Ashridge Management College, Mr. C. Macrae, and by the RHA chairman, Mr. N. R. Wynn (Robert Wynn and Sons Ltd., Newport. Mon.). Prominent members of the RHA who will take the chair at the discussions which form part of the syllabus are Mr. P. H. R. Turner (Coast Lines Ltd.,. Liverpool), immediate past chairman, RHA.; Mr. J. M. Silbermann (Brent Group of Companies Ltd., London) who has for some years organized a successful training scheme within his group of companies; Mr. J. B. Wild (Harold Wood and Sons Ltd., Heckmondwike) who has also run a successful training scheme for some time past; and Mr. E. L.

Williams (Williams Brothers [Queensferry Ltd.) chairman, education and training committee, RHA.

There will be lectures on recent legislation by Mr. J. Lane, assistant secretary, Ministry of Transport; on driver control by Mr. P. R. Packham (A. Packham Ltd., London) who has already noted excellent results from a productivity scheme introduced in his company towards the end of February 1968; on the Road Haulage Association by Mr. G. K. Newman, director-general, RHA; on insurance by Mr. A. E. Donald, a member of the Association's insurance panel; on security by Mr. J. T. Brown (Atlas Express Ltd., London) chairman, vehicle security committee, RHA; and on the Industrial Training Act by Mr. P. Haxby, director of training, Road Transport Industry Training Board.

Subjects to be dealt with by college lecturers are the nature of management; finance (capital); industrial relations; personnel management: work study and organization and management; budgets; work planning; administration; costing; marketing; company aims and policy.

The fee for the five days is £65, and students will he able to claim £12 a day from the Road Transport Industry Training Board, plus travelling expenses if the distance is more than 40 miles.

Budgets; Work planning; Private study; Insurance, A. E. Donald; General discussion, chairman J. M. Si)bermann; Security, J. T. Brown, Fourth day. Administration; Costing; Marketing; General discussion, chairman J. B. Wild; Industrial Training Act, P. Haxby.

Fifth day. Company aims and policy; Forum, chairman E. L. Williams; Course review.

Conference for Luton and Watford hauliers

The Luton, Watford and district sub-area of the RHA has organized a residential conference of transport managers for 25 members of the subarea at Pendley Manor, Tring. Members will have the opportunity to discuss the responsibilities of transport managers in small firms if the proposals in the Transport Bill take effect.

The conference will be divided into two parts. The subjects to be covered from October 14 to 17 1968 are the provisions of the Bill, vehicle testing and maintenance, vehicle operation, labour relations, road safety and the training of vehicle staff. From November 18 to 21 the conference will discuss legal requirements, insurance, costing, finance and training of management and office staff. The fee of £40 would be covered by the grant payable by the Training Board.
