Three Versions Available

INDEPENDENT DRIVE to each of the two rear axles is a 1 feature of a Bedford TK with-Reynolds Boughton six-wheel conversion announced this week. The new model is a development of a prototype shown by Reynolds Boughton in the demon , stration park at. last year's Commercial Motor Show. . In developing the six-wheel conversion. Vauxhall Motors Ltd. and Reynolds Boughton Engineering Services Ltd. have made the fullest use of standard Bedford parts. It is based on the Bedford TK heavy-duty 7-ton tipper chassis and with the conversion the maximum gross vehicle weight is 38,000 lb. (17 tons). A choice of three wheelbases is offered-12 ft. 2 in..

13 ft. 9 in. and 15 ft. 5 in. The short-wheelbase version is designed for fitting a 10-cu.-yd. tipper body, the 13-ft. 9-in. version has been developed as a general-purpose vehicle or as the basis of a 5/6-cu.-yd. concrete mixer, whilst the long-wheelbase model will accommodate 21-ft. platform or drop-side bodies.

The engine used is the Leyland 0.370 diesel, driving through .a 14-in.-diameter clutch to a four-speed gearbox (a five-speed unit is optional). From the gearbox the drive is taken to a Reynolds Boughton two-speed transfer box which splits the drive to each of the rear axles. This box incorporates standard Bedford gears and bearings and alternative specifications can be supplied. The standard is driving both rear axles in directdrive high or in a 2 to 1 reduction low ratio. Optional, at no extra cost, is a layout which gives the 2 to 1 reduction when both axles are driven and direct-drive when the forward rear aide only is driven. A full-torque power take-off can be fitted to the transfer box at extra cost.

The standard Bedford 10-in.-deep frame is employed, this being extended according to wheelbase and sleeved from a point 9 in. ahead of the front-spring rear hanger bracket to the rear end of the ftame. Rear suspension is by four semi-elliptic springs, the front of each being anchored to the frame with the rear ends linked by a system of bell-crank levers and tension rods to prevent axle hop. The braking system employs a tandem-piston hydraulic master cylinder and an extra-capacity air compressor. An additional air-pack servo is incorporated for the third-axle brakes. The handbrake operates on all four wheels of the rear bogie and, in addition, there is an auxiliary disc-type transmission brake operated by a lever mounted on the steering column.

List price of the six-wheel conversion varies with wheelbase and is £955 for the 12-ft. 2-in.-wheelbase version and £979 and £989 for the 13-ft. 9-in. and 15-ft. 5-in.-wheelbase models respectively.
