11 Parliament may support the IRU's proposals for a maximum length of 18 m. for road trains and a single-axle weight limit of 13 metric tons. Although some members of the Parliament's transport committee said last week that the I3-ton limit was too high and might cause road damage, most of the members supported the IRU figures; the committee Was holding discussions to prepare the official opinion which the Parliament has to give on the E.E.C. Commission's draft proposals. The Commission's suggested limits on the two contentious points (The Commercial Motor last week, page 48) are 17-2 m. and 10 metric tons. The Parliamentary transport committee was, however, unanimous in regarding the Commission's proposals as a first step towards the necessary technical standardization within the Community. and hoped that they would be followed by harmonization of regulations on braking, lighting and so on, -to provide the basis for a complete set of Community technical rules.

At the meeting it was revealed that the European Parliament's transport committee has been invited by the U.S. State Department, Trade Department and Interstate Commerce Commission to make an "information tour" of Amc rica.
