EAST YORKSHIRE MOTOR SERVICES LTD. is to be informed that all its buses should be fitted with flashing indicators, and that "it is wrong to leave the responsibility to the driver for giving hand signals ".

This follows a court case at Pocklineton, East Yorks, last week, in which Mr. Cyril Straker, a 41-year-old driver of the company's depot in that town, was found "not guilty" of driving a oneman-operated vehicle without due care and attention.

Mr. Straker's solicitor, Mr. A. Iveson, acting on behalf of the Transport and General Workers' Union, said that he agreed with the sentiments expressed by the Bench, and he would bring the matter to the attention of the company.

Mr. David D. Marshall, managing director and deputy chairman of Greengate and Irwell Rubber Co. Ltd., was inaugurated as president of the Federation of British Rubber and Allied Manufacturers in place of Mr. C. H. M. Baker, a director of the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co. Ltd., who retires after the customary two years in office. The new vice-presidents of the Federation are Mr. Angus R. Reid, chairman of the London Rubber Co. Ltd., and Mr. Eric Holt, a director of the Dunlop Rubber Co. Ltd. Mr. Stuart C. Covell, director of the Federation since 1945, has also retired. His place in. the Federation will be taken by the deputy director, Mr. 0. C. T. R. Normandale.

The police alleged that at first Mr. Straker only signalled with "two fingers" out of the cab window, to slow the car down, but this was denied by the defence, and a witness said she saw Mr. Straker give the full, correct hand signal.

The car driver admitted in court that he should not have tried to overtake near a junction.

. Chairman of the Magistrates, air. T. E. Scaife, said that the case had been quite properly brought by the police, but there was an element of doubt to which Mr. Straker was entitled, and the magistrate wished to add the rider on the matter of signals.

Mr. G. Veronesi has been appointed general manager of Pirelli Ltd. He came to England in August, 1959, as technical assistant to the then general manager Mr. G. Venosla, was appoEired assistant works manager shortly afterwards and works manager on December 1, 1960. Mr. G. Mr. J. L. Brown has been appointed works superintendent of the Eastern National Omnibus Company. Mr. Brown was previously with Eastern National and reached the position of mechanical superintendent of the Luton depot in 1952. He is now rejoining the company from Lagos Municipal Transport Services in Nigeria.

Obituary

WEregret to announce the death of Mr. Harold Howarth on Monday, July 15. He was at one time a partner in Howarth Brothers of Royton and during the war became area road haulage officer of the Ministry's road haulage organization in the Preston and Manchester districts. He later joined B.R.S., becoming manager of the White City (Manchester) branch. He was first president of the Manchester branch of the Traffic Manager's Club and in 1956 was National Chairman.
