rLOSURE of uneconomic railway lines in Scotland under the Beeching

"

axe" would not automatically mean substantially increased revenue for the bus companies, but could result in them "holding the baby ", said Mr, James Amos, chairman of Scottish Omnibuses Group (Holdings) Ltd., in Glasgow last week.

It was much more likely that the additional expenditure incurred in providing the necessary bus services would be more than the additional revenue gained, he added.

Mr. Amos was giving evidence at a sitting of the Traffic Commissioners in support of an application by his company for fares increases ranging from 4d. to 5d. on single and return fares.

" If the whole of the Beeching Plan is put into effect in Scotland, we might make about £50,000 a year," said Mr. Amos.

"But the position is much more likely to go the other way. Dr. Beeching will encounter such opposition to the closing of these branch lines that those closed will be the least remunerative, so that we could have a loss of £100,000."

If granted the increases would come into operation on August 4. The Commissioners will give their decision later.
