ROCKETING LA ND prices in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics could bring a cash windfall to the Somerfield supermarket chain when it sells a warehouse in Essex.

As reported,de pots at Rain ham, Essex and Welwyn Garden City, Herts will be closed down by April (CM 12 January). Somerfield's spokesman Pete Williams says a review concluded that the group is over-resourced in the South-East.

Logistics firm Exel, which manages the two sites, confirms that up to 450 of its employees will lose their jobs unless they can be redeployed.

Transport and General Workers Union spokesman Andrew Dodgshon says that potentially lucrative land prices following the award of the 2012 Olympics to London might have added weight to the supermarket's decision.

'Me union is awaiting clarification on job losses. Dodgshon says: "We're putting the pressure on to find out what's happening."
