The next version of the Transit will be unveiled at the NEC CV Show in April — and we've had a sneak preview. Colin Barnett reports.

TI IL TRANSIT'S latest incarnation is no mere facelift — almost everything forward of the B-pillar is new. The most obvious change is the restyled front bodywork; following the recent pictures of Volkswagen's Crafter, a theme appears to be developing with vertically stacked headlamps and very large grille apertures.

But arguably more relevant, is the all-new interior, with a car-like dashboard featuring Ford's first fascia-mounted gear lever.

Behind the nine-inch-wide Blue Oval badge sit a new line-up of six diesels and an I.PG-ready petrol engine. These include the new 2.2-litre unit that was develope jointly with PSA. All the diese incorporate the latest commix rail injection and are Euro-4 con pliant:they drive through five an six-speed manual transmissions.

Ford offers a choice of no le; than 60 body combinations, Th basic suspension layouts remai unchanged, but the previot electronic braking and tractio systems are augmented by ES stability control for the first tim The standard driver's airbag ca be supplemented by optional sid head and thorax airbags.

TheTransit's already impressiu security features are beefed up h a configurable unlocking systen allowing the operator to decide o the order in which doors ar unlocked by successive presses c the remote control.
