Stuart Thomas bring you his regular round-up of way our local and national press has covered th( wonderful world of road transport this week.

British road signs were widely praised for their easy-tounderstand design when they were introduced in 1965. But a recently published survey revealed a widespread ignorance of what they are telling us.

Unsurprisingly the speed camera signs are understood by everyone. However, it appears that they not only ensure motorists curb their speed, but are also valuable tools for gormless youths posing in their souped-up Renault 5s. Or whatever chavs like to drive these days.

Three joyriders (or a "trio of thickos", as The Sun branded them). successfully got tt faces on film while speeding through the mean streets ( Bournemouth, by swivelling round, smiling and giving it thumbs up (for the successful theft of an H-rag Escort, maybe?) at the flashing lens. Alas, this laddish display c de vivre also had the unfortunate effect of proving beyo reasonable doubt who it was that had made the decisic steal an H-reg Escort.

-When we found the car it was completely burned ou had few clues," PC Robin Ellis told the tabloid. "Then wt the photograph and couldn't believe it."

At least the oyriders • vvere actually breaking Driver pays Fla the speed limit. By way of contrast Sean Toehill was banned from driving for a year and fined 290 when a speed camera snapped firn travelling at 22mph in a 40mph area of Cu par. Fife.

Toehill had tried to entertain his passenger chums by ta hands off the wheel, leaning across the dashboard (we have to ensure your portrait is perfectly framed) and MC 'peace signs' at the camera. He was gurning more friar grinning, yet for some reason police were still not arnusi "I can't believe that speed cameras can be used in tr way," an enlightened Toehill told The Telegraph, possibl while wondering where on earth he will go to get his pa pictures taken in the future.
