Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Fuel delivery drivers working out of the Buncefield site have been given greater flexibility by the NT. David Harris reports.

THE RELAXATION OF the drivers hours and working time rules in the aftermath of the Buncelield fuel depot fire has been extended for another month.

The changes, which only apply to tanker drivers directly affected by the fire, originally expired on 13 January: they have been extended until 10 February.

The changes include raising the daily driving limit from nine hours to 10 hours: extending the fortnightly driving limit of 90 hours: and replacing the 45-hour weekly rest with 24 hours.

However this does not affect the requirement to take an 11 -hour daily rest or a 45-minute break after 41/2 hours' driving.

Drivers are being required to write on the hack of their tacho discs explaining why the normal limitsare being exceeded. The INT says employers and unions should agree how to implement these temporary changes. A note issued by Mark Bosly. head of drivers' hours and working time at the um states,: The department also wishes to make clear that drivers should not be expected to drive whilst tired — employers remain responsible for the safety of their employees and other road users."

Any queries about how the changes should be implemented can be e-mailed to ronald.arnottei vosa.gsi.gov.uk • For inure on the aftermath of the Bunrefield fire see page 28.
