The interest at a truck show is not confined to the exhibits: there's no better place to get product engineers into a quiet corner and find out what's in the pipeline.

When MAN launched its F2000 tractor range late last year MAN boss Rudolf Rupprecht hinted of some dramatic developments, and at Brussels we discovered that those developments include a 600hp version of its mighty vee-10 engine (see Vehicles News, page 17).

More immediately MAN has tied up the first six month's production of Eaton's new S-Series syncro box which appears in the UK as standard fitment on the F2000 Series in April.

0 fficially, Leyland Daf is vigorously maintaining that Daf s latest 55 Series middleweight, complete with 45 Series (Roadrunner) cab will not be offered as a righthwker. But in private that statement has been modified to "not for the moment"—engineering work on right-hand-drive versions is already in hand. Don't expect a RI-ID 55 Series this year, however: while the 50 Series lightweight Freighter continues to sell well it will keep the 55 Series away. When demand falls away that could change. In four month's time Iveco's EuroStar flagship will finally arrive on the UK market complete with a 420hp version of its 13.8-litre straight-six. And later this year the Italian truck maker will announce a 470hp version, in readiness for the Euro-2 emission limits.

According to Volvo Truck Corporation executive vice president Tommy Rengman, Volvo is "very close" to deciding whether it will find a partner with which to build a new 7.5-tonner or go it alone. In either case, Volvo will definitely be re-entering the 7.5-tonne arena. One vehicle that didn't quite appear on the Mercedes-Benz stand was its long awaited Ti Transporter replacement. A heavily shrouded version of the new range called the T1N was on the stand but there was no way the Germans were going to unwrap it. For some reason best known to M-B it was only lifted on the last day of the show, long after GM's technical team had headed home to bring you this report. For a full description of Mercedes' new panel van you'll have to wait till next week.
